Audio- “Sound that is capable of being heard”

Well this is my first post, so stick with me. So our first question- if a tree falls in a forest does it make a blah blah blah.

Well I want to make this blog about all things audio, that is audio equipment (home and professional) and sound engineering in general, but I may chuck in some other stuff sometimes.

Introductions

My name’s Brent I am in my 40’s (remember 40 is the new 30) and I really like audio stuff. My professional background is in Electrical & electronic engineering, but I jumped into the computer world about 17 years ago. I have also been involved with live and recorded sound engineering for 25 years, mostly in a voluntary capacity in various church’s in New Zealand and Great Britain, plus I like to make lots of noise on my drums. I have also owned and operated several project studio’s in my time and have just recently completed another one.

So why a blog about audio, well audio however its created, captured, or delivered is one important part of how we experience the world around us. Now for me I like those experiences to be positive, but so often today (especially in churches) that experience can be less than satisfactory. So I hope through this blog we can investigate together this world of audio and how we might go about creating, capturing and delivering a positive experience for us and our listeners.

Beginnings

I got introduced to this ‘audio’ world in my teens where I got interested in electronics and l built my first Mosfet power amplifier, since then I have owned, purchased and used a large amount of equipment, some good and some not so great. I am old enough to remember buying my first CD player and one CD when the technology was first introduced to New Zealand, my car had just been written off in an accident (no one was hurt) so I had about $5K in my hands and being young and silly, it did not stick there for long, I went and purchased my first HiFi system with a CD player and a remote control- this was big stuff. Jumping from there I remember buying my first DVD player and disk in the UK, a region 1 imported disk and a creative laps DVD drive which had a dedicated computer card for decoding the video, and how I was blown away by the quality of the picture and sound.

Anyway today we are bombarded by endless options in our pursuit of creating and delivering ‘good’ audio, be that software or hardware or a combination of both. So lets begin this journey into the world of audio.
